Annie's Story

Counselor PictureI cannot express in words what an amazing blessing Camp Angel has been in my life, and to so many others that have experienced cancer through a loved one. In 1997, I was fortunate enough to attend the very first Camp Angel; as my family was attempting to deal with the heavy sorrow due to the loss of my mother who had a rare type of cancer. I found an amazing one of a kind support through my experience at Camp Angel; my counselors understood what I was going through and could relate to me and the other kids at camp were going through similar difficult situations. My spirit was granted a strange revival to know I was not alone in my loss; my family was not alone in our seemingly unbearable sorrow and frustration due to the effects of cancer. My life was changed due to Camp Angel; as a sense of stability and courage was one of the wonderful outcomes of my Camp Angel experience.

After all I have gained through Camp Angel, I decided I wanted to give back by becoming a counselor in the hopes of helping others get through the effects of experiencing cancer through a loved one. Every camp brings new lives that are affected by cancer; my intentions are to continue to be supportive and provide a safe haven for the children to come and know they are not alone in their daily struggles due to cancer. I have found that even though the duration of Camp Angel is one weekend, the effects and relationships built last a lifetime. - Annie
