Guardian Angels Testimonials
We receive many stories and responses and want to share a few of them (in part) with you. Each one gently touches our hearts.
Leandra’s Story (nominated by her mom, Jeanne):
My daughter Leandra has been my Guardian Angel for the past 8 months. She was there with me through surgery and 9 days in the hospital. She traveled 70 miles each way every day to be with me. At the time she was going to school but gave up her time there to be with me. When I came home and went through chemo she sat through the 7 hours of therapy and took care of me at home – while doing her schoolwork and graduating as an honor student. She was always cooking meals and seeing to it that I had the right nutrition. She was there every day, driving me to my appointments and just being with me. She kept my spirits up by taking me places on my good days. She has been my advocate at the hospital/clinic and taking care of me at home. She talked and cried with me. I could not ask for a better caretaker than my daughter.
Dear Angel On My Shoulder: I am nominating Dorothy as a Guardian Angel. She was just one of the many great staff members at St. Luke’s Hospital where I was receiving my cancer treatment.
The reason I am nominating Dorothy is because I believe she did something “above and beyond” her responsibilities as a nursing assistant. Unfortunately, at about 5 months into my treatment, my girlfriend needed to leave for the summer to teach college summer courses. I was new to the Milwaukee area and didn’t get visitors during the week. I was also fighting an infection and contracted viral meningitis making me extremely depressed and my treatments more difficult.
Dorothy noticed that I wasn’t myself and would come into my room to try and cheer me up. I constantly peered out the window wishing I were outside. Dorothy walked into my room with a wheelchair and took me outside for a ride. It was the first time I had fresh air in my lungs in at least 3 weeks. We sat outside and talked about nothing and I believe it was the turning point in my treatment. I had not smiled that much in such a long time. After that day, Dorothy would stop by my room to talk about movies and music and occasionally take me outside. She treated me like a friend more than a patient.
I am hoping you can honor Dorothy as a Guardian Angel for in my eyes she is an “angel” and I know she will continue to touch many more lives like she touched mine.
Thank you, Matt
Angel On My Shoulder: My Dad dedicates his “all” to my Mom. He has given up two major hunting trips to Colorado just so he wouldn’t have to leave my Mom alone in her condition (Stage 4 cancer). Dad starts the day by getting up early every morning to walk the dog, help with household chores, etc. before going to work. He calls home regularly throughout the day to check on her. He does all the household work inside (laundry, dishes, etc.) and out including the grocery shopping all while dealing with the stresses of his supervisory position at his place of employment.
My Dad always puts himself last, giving up his hobbies just to be by Mom’s side at all times. I hope you will see how special he is and that he deserves a Guardian Angel award. Thank you, His daughter, Bridgette
Note: Bridgette’s mom has since passed away.
Lastly, a follow-up note from one of our very special Guardian Angel recipients. Acknowledgments like these make our day:
THANK YOU for the wonderful recognition and gift package. As you all know, cancer does not only affect the person with this awful diagnosis. You have a wonderful organization and I feel blessed to be a part of it. Karen
