Guardian Angels
"Good Morning Angel On My Shoulder,

Steve received his Guardian Angel recognition package. This gesture meant so much to him. He was taken back by it and very appreciative. He really needed it at this time. It is nice that an organization realized that cancer affects more than just the patient and HONORS them. You have made a rough time a lot more enjoyable. We thank you for all that you do. You truly are angels. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts."

"I would like to express my gratitude for the very nice gift basket and plaque. The basket was lovingly filled with many of my favorite things. I still remember well the day it was delivered. I felt so honored by all of your group’s kindness. My husband, Art, died in September 2005, after a 14-month battle with acute leukemia. He fought hard. I was so fortunate to be able to care for him and have his last days and hours spent in his home. Your group’s gift gave me an “uplifting” through difficult times. We also periodically received other gifts from Angel On My Shoulder at the clinic. Your group is doing fantastic work.

With sincere appreciation,"

"Thank you so much for the Certificate of Commendation” and the lovely gift basket. I am going to place a picture in my “Angel On My Shoulder” frame. I have my one Angel on an end table in the living room and my “Smile” beanie on the window ledge so that I can have morning coffee with someone smiling on me that I can see. I place the bath items in my travel bag. They are perfect and the Angel pin is finding a home on my jacket.

Take care and THANK YOU AGAIN"

"I would like to nominate my dear Aunt Marilynn Steffen as a Guardian Angel. In March 2001, I was diagnosed with Stage IV ovarian cancer. At the time, my children were ages 1,3,5,6 and 9. My Aunt Marilynn literally put her life on hold to help my family and me to get through the very difficult journey ahead.

She made the trip from her home in Wausau to ours in Milwaukee every time I had chemo (24th cycle completed May 2005). She made certain that she was with my family and me as I recuperated from four major surgeries and several minor ones. She sat with me for hours through treatments and comforted and encouraged me at home as I endured most unpleasant side effects. Sh“e helped to keep the house running and the children to feel a sense of normalcy while all of this uncertainty was going on.

Aunt Marilynn was my caretaker while I underwent a stem cell transplant. During this time, she spent hours gowned and masked at my bedside keeping vigil. She would not allow me to give up. When we were released to an apartment setting, Aunt Marilynn practiced a lot of “tough love” and even insisted I get up and walk when my feet would not even carry me to the bathroom.

After I was able to return home, Aunt Marilynn spent every week at my house as I recovered. She took me to countless appointments, stayed at my side through the good days and bad days and never met a day without a smile and outspoken hope for my recovery. I am eternally grateful to her.

Aunt Marilynn is the epitome of an angel. She did not have to put her earthly life on hold to see me through all these struggles but she did unselfishly. She is without a doubt, my Guardian Angel."

"Tonight I am sending this nomination for your Guardian Angel recognition for my mom, Patricia McCallum. She’s not only my mom but also my best friend . . . my Guardian Angel.

I am 35 years old. In March of 2005 I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer and it had also spread to my lymph nods. The doctors told me my chance of survival beyond 5 years was 50-50. That’s tough news to hear when you have two young children and a close family.

My mom holds a full-time management position. Her job requires so much of her, yet she has never left my side as I struggle to get through this challenging time in my life. Here are a few of her merciful acts of caring and love:

I had to attend many pre-surgical appointments where I was required to make some tough decisions. Mom was always with me to help me think things through and come up with the best decision. She never missed an appointment.

In April 2005, I had a mastectomy, 26 lymph nodes removed, and immediate reconstruction. Mom stayed by my side in the hospital and ensured that I had everything needed. She learned to care for me upon my release.

In May 2005 I began chemotherapy treatments. She attended every single one and they were long grueling appointments. Afterwards, she would accompany me home and spend a couple nights at my house, making sure my family had good meals, helped the kids with homework, baths and everything that goes along with childcare. She also pampered me. Mom would get me whatever food sounded good, do the grocery shopping, pick up the house, do laundry and ensure the house was quiet so I could rest.

I’m now in radiation therapy. She continues to be at my side at all times. She is a model caregiver. She continues to sacrifice her time to care for my family and me. I would like to shout from the rooftops for all to hear how much I love and appreciate her. Words just don’t seem enough to thank such a loving and devoted mom”."
